COUNTRY BACKGROUND

GOD CALLING

The population of Cambodia is about 13.5 million, with around 1.5 million in the capital city of  Phnom Penh. Other significant towns include Sihanouk ville on the southern coast and Battambang in the west near the Thai border. The country’s recent history has been dominated by war, with the rule of the Khmer Rouge (KR) from 1975 to 1979 claiming the lives of close to two million Cambodians. The Khmer Rouge wiped out a great a deal of the country’s intellectuals including Christians, Pastors and Leaders and this has personally affected most everyone you meet in Cambodia. At that time the KR destroyed everything such as schools, hospitals, factories, the economy, and the people worked as slaves to produce rice. There was no church or gospel at this time. Some people have called it a prison without walls throughout the entire country. Vietnamese-backed forces liberated the country in 1979 and for a decade controlled it, much to the dismay of the west. After a protracted negotiation and disarmament process resulting in free election in 1993, a stable government has now emerged. Only since 1998 has the country had full peace.

Although the country enjoys peace, the consequences of war have caused many problems: 55 percent of people cannot read and write, 40 percent of lives are below life standard. Many Cambodians do not have a real peace in their hearts.

The Good News was opened up again in 1990 before the first election after the war, and churches have been being planted. Now there are about 200,000 believers in Cambodia. That means 1.5 % of Cambodian people.

In the second week of February 2001 Peace of Christ Church was established and founded by the elders team who desired to serve the Lord as a team to fulfill His covenant under the direction of the Holy Spirit. Peace of Christ Church has a Vision, God breathed aim, and Plans for wholistic Ministry in Cambodia. Starting with 12 believers from home to home, by His grace the Lord has now blessed us with the establishment of a network of churches in many locations.
